The island of Bali, also known as island of one
thousand temples or island of the Gods was first discovered
by hippies in the 60´s and after by australian surfers
in the 70´s who made it known worldwide by publishing
pictures in surfing magazines and by the movie “Morning
of the earth” made by the australian surfer Albert “Alby”
Falzon.
Nowdays Bali is the gateway to the majority of
surfers visiting Indonesia who like to venture in surf trips
around the islands looking for the unmatched waves perfection.
If in the 70´s Kuta was nothing more than
a fishermen village without electricity, today the reality
is completely different and there are hundreds of good hotels
and restaurants for a very reasonable prices all over the
area plus galleries, shopping malls, hospitals, cinemas and
an endless options of bars, pubs and night clubs that make
the night life of Bali famous worldwide.
The climate in Bali is well divided in a dry (high)
season (winter) that goes from april till November with the
best months being july and august and the wet (low) season
(summer) that goes from december till march.
During the high season the famous “Trade Winds”,
winds from E.S.E., come consistently almost every day, blowing
offshore conditions on the most seeked side of the island
(west coast) where the waves, in majority lefts, like Uluwatu
and Padang-padang are located. On the east coast this wind
is straight onshore.
With the beginning of the wet season the winds
change direction and start to blow offshore on the other side
of the island (onshore at Ulu´s side) making some incredible
world class right handers like Sanur, Nusa Dua, Sri Lanka
amongst others start to work.At this time of the year the
big swells don´t come so often like in the dry season
but small and medium days are very common with the occasional
bigger days.
It would be impossible to tell exactly the number
of islands that are part of the indonesian archipelago as
every year new islands are officially catalogued. The number
of islands officially catalogued until 2005 is superior than
18.000 but is believed that the total number of islands must
be way larger than that.
From all the islands that are part of the archipelago
of Indonesia, Bali is the only one where the predominant religion
is hindu. The balinese believe in Karma as a main philosophy
in life wich consists in the belief that everything you do
to others, good or bad, will come back to you.

Another characteristic of the balinese people
is their humbleness, simplicity and the smile always present
in their faces. They are a very happy and helpful people even
with all the difficulties they face. The economy is very poor
and wages very low so the differences between social classes
is huge.
