Canggu has been surfed since the 70´s but
since the 90´s that started to get really crowded. It´s
one of the main spots to practice modern surfing turns, specialy
for balinese and japanese surfers.
Best conditions:
South swell, medium size (max. 6 feet) with incoming or high
tide and light or no winds at all. (sunrise or sunset).
Localization:
Canggu is localized just after Kerobokan at about 20 min.
from Kuta in Tanah Lot´s direction (North).
Type of wave:
At Canggu there are many reefs and waves but the best is and
more famous is Pererenam, a righthander with a long barrel
just after the drop followed by a good wall for top turns
where there is also a left that is a little shorter but also
with a good section for maneuvers. Around 300 meters from
this point of rights, there are two lefthanders that can get
really good depending on conditions. All this waves are excellent
for a high performance surfing.
Access:
By the road that goes to Tanah Lot following the signs to
Pererenam.
Crowd factor:
Canggu is the spot for daily trainings for many of the best
balinese surfers getting crowded almost everyday of the season
with a lot of balinese and Japanese.
Infraestructure:
There are some excellent hotels in the area but at the beach
only a few warungs serving local dishes and snacks.
Tips:
Because of the constant crowd and the many locals that surf
really good, the best is to get here very early when the tide
is high in the morning. Try to be discreet and don´t
draw attention.
