Everything ready for one more season at Asu remembering the last time i was on the island on Jun./03 Surfboards, dollars, tickets...my God, how complicated is to get rid of this system that suck us in so much, but we surfers are of a warrior kind and the more it tries to suck us in the more it pushes us to plan a scape in great style...(see you big cities)
We planned this trip in 2005, but by Crom or Thor, irradiating his rage around Indonesia, the ground got shaken and the land washed on a way that has not been seen on the last 100 years...unmatched tragedy.
That was exactly when "Pena" start his story part 1. It was us who had to change our destiny and pray for those who were there... Medan. Hot as hell. Normal, as always basic madness at the airport with all kinds of people possible; Outside already waiting with two big ass vans was "Pena" with all his staff, carrying all the surfboards, luggages and personal of the travel agency partner of the Asu Paradise Surf Camp.
We spent the night at Medan that is included in the package at the hotel Danau Toba; Very interesting as there is night life connected to the hotel with Sumatran rock concerts, killer!
On the next days we got a quick flight to Nias. Everything fine, boards and all...we already have another van with AC and went on to Sirombu direction crossing the island from one side to the other. Long way, narrow road...a bit of fatigue. Arriving at Sirombu three and half hours later we have a team from the camp waiting for us with the departure to be made by boat from the beach.
First session at Asu, we could see the change on the reef, a lot more exposed, made the wave get more defined on both sections, hollower, it lost a bit of its lenght but only on the old end section, where the end of the wave used to be now is exposed dry reef, all you gotta do is kick out before that, easy.
We had 18 days of a lot of surfing, but on 3 days specially we had the peak of the swell 8' plus...that ended up getting epic and incredibly with no one around, only us at the camp.
When we were recovering from so much surfing, we had a great fishing and diving that i will not forget; We fished from the boat trollying and explored many diving spots; fishes of an amazing colorfulness not to mention the clearness of the water...i dont know 30, 40...50 mts of visibility?
At night, dinner of the Gods, always...there was an Australian there, friend, that used to go there for dinner and just couldn't believe...he just said..."I can't believe...you guys eat like kings!! Sushi, all the fish you could eat and other varieties made our menu and the fishes were usually of 5 Kg to 7 Kg...an average of 3 per fishing session, Groupers and Trevallis.
We had a session on the last day at Bawa that marked me forever... 5 to 6 feet epic...light breeze offshore, ocean transparent blue...i paddled for a wave and spotted on the outside a beautifull Barracuda...i looked up...it was like the wave had raise its lip and gently was inviting me to take it...best Bawa i ever got on the two seasons.
And on the end i would like to to say that this trip was amazing, we had a surfing experience so hard to find these days...the search for the perfect wave without the crowds...i saw it and for that and much more i send my congratulations to Asu Surf Camp and to "Pena". Thank you Rodrigo, Thank you Asu.
