  Kai Martin died surfing Wainiha Rights on 1/30/2007. He pulled in grabbed the rail on his back hand and did not make it.

  "I've met Kai in 2000 at Padang-padang during a very consistent month in a season of excelent waves at Bali. We used to surf Padang very often and soon became friends... after that i've met him a few times on other seasons and in June of 2006 we stayed for 10 days at the same place at Desert Point at Suleman's place. It was a couple of weeks of perfect waves at Desert Point not seen in a long time... Kai was travelling with his buddies from Hawaii Donovon, Jeremy and Chris. I remember that there was the expectation of a new swell for the following days and Kai and his friends were going to sumbawa to score Super Sucks and took the little grommets form Deserts along in their car helping the evolution of these little surfers.

  That was the last time i surfed with Kai...
  The image i keep from him is of a short guy always full of energy, goofy footer, a charger really good tube rider that was always cracking jokes and laughing bringing fun and hapiness to all the places hes been through.
