Grajagan or G-land as it is better known to surfers,
is a magical wave that in fact is situated at Plengkung beach
inside the enormous national park called “Blambangan
Nature Reserve” at about 20 Km from Grajagan village
from where the speed boats to the surf camp take off.
A true adventure, the most constant factor that
generates adrenalin rush here is danger.Because of being situated
at the end of Java facing deep oceanic waters, G-land is very
consistent and a real swell magnet with an incredible biodiversity
that include dolphins, sharks, turtles, school of big fishes
and sea snakes that are spotted frequently.
Apart from that, the power of the waves, the shallow
and sharp reef and the absurd amount of sea urchins found
on it are always there.
This park comprehend a giant area of dense jungle
very rich in fauna and flora where there are many wilds animals
such as: spiders, scorpions, rats, snakes, lizards, giant
bats, monkeys, wild boars and many big cats that already been
seen such as leopards, pumas (confirmed) and even tigers (reports
not confirmed) besides of having a big incidence of malaria.
The first known reports about surfing in the area
say that G-land was first surfed in the summer of 1974 by
two American surfers from southern California, Bob Jones and
Bob Laverty that would have seen perfect waves from inside
the plane in a flight from Java to Bali later coming back
from Bali in a searching mission in a Hobie catamaram when
they finally found G-land. In 1977 Mike Boyum and Gerry lopez
opened the first surf camp of Indonesia, the G-land surf camp.
Later the balinese surfer/businessmen Bobby Radiasa start
to truly organize the surf camp catering to all the needs
of surfers that come to this place with a faultless infrastructure.
• The trip
These days the trip to the surf camp can be done
leaving from Bali overland(most common), by speed boat or
by seaplane.
The package more used by the surf camps follow
this schedule: Departure from Bali around 22pm to 23 pm in
an airconditioned minibus to Gilimanuk (around 4 hs), ferry
to Banyuwangi, Java (about 2 hs) and speed boat from Grajagan
village to the camp (about 20 min.).
The arrival at G-land is always at early morning
right on time for breakfast.
