The Hinako islands are situated righ in front
of the central west coast of Nias southwest of the Nias central
town of Sirombu; first visited by pilgrim surfers that would
come to Nias and get the boat from Sirombu , these islands
got well known after being exposed to the world thru the surf
movie "The Search" where Tom Curren appeared surfing
big waves at Bawa on a fish board 5'7.
After that, the islands went again to the midia
spotlight because of it's closeness to the epicenter of the
earthquake that caused the terrible Tsunami on December 2004;
Soon after, it went back to center of attention for getting
it's reef elevated out of the water and exposed after a radical
elevation generated by another violent earthquake.
Besides loosing the last section of the wave forever
(Nuclear Zone) , the wave at Asu is still excellent as it
can be seen at recent surfing videos (Kelly Slater and the
Young Guns II) and recent photos and also was registered the
creation of a new secret spot after this elevation on the
reef.
A very unique thing about the Hinakos is the strategic
positioning of it's two main breaks Asu and Bawa; When the
wind is blowing offshore at Asu its onshore at Bawa and vice-versa.
The distance between the two spots is about 40 minutes by
boat.
Nowdays there are many boat trips that can be
arranged on the region but the best way to explore the Hinakos
at 100% of its potencial is still made by staying in one of
the 2 surf camps located on the island, both owed by brazilians
a californian and their respective partners.
The best season is the dry season from March to
November that happen to be on the same time as the biggest
swells that constantly arrive on the region and because of
its difficult access, epic days with very few surfers in the
water are still common.
The trip:
The trip to Asu usually start at Nias and packages can be
organized with departure from Bali or directly from Nias.
Waves:

Asu:
Long and hollow left that even not having its end section
anymore (Nuclear Zone) is excellent still and can be surfed
at almos any swell size.
Bawa:
Heavy and powerfull right with spacious tube sections that
can handle the biggest swells that arrive on the coast without
afecting its formation...its power is compared to many to
Sunset on Hawaii.
