At about 45 min. from Dompu there is one of
the most consistent and laid back places on Indonesia, Lakey
Peak. At Lakey Peak it´s not necessary to have a transport
as all the surf spots are located very close to each other
and there is not much to do apart from surfing and relaxing.
A bit of fishing sometimes, a good dive and that’s
about it.
There are many ways to get to Lakeys but the
most exciting way is overland still, not to mention the
chances of scoring one of the many breaks on the way uncrowded
and smoking, all depends on your luck.
Leaving Bali is better when its done at night
as it takes only 2 hours to the place where you will take
the ferry to Lombok (Padang Bay) and after it´s 4
hours in the ferry until you get to Lombok island.
Leave Kuta going towards Sanur and after you
passed Sanur follow the signs that indicate the city of
Gianyar that is on the way to Padang Bay and where you will
finally find signs indicating how to get there.
At Padang bay there are Ferries to Lombok every
two hours. Keep in mind that the vehicles leaving Bali,
BY THE LAW, must have a document
sign by the owner of the vehicle authorizing the car to
be taken to another island. Without this document, a “Special
Tax” (around USD 20,00) can be arranged with the officers
on duty to solve the problem.
The ideal is to leave Kuta around 8 pm arriving
at Padang Bay around 10 pm to get to Lombok before sunrise.
This way you can also avoid the “wonderful”
traffic of trucks and buses that are common during the day
in between Kuta and Padang Bay.
At Lombok you will disembark at the harboring
town of Lembar, drive then to the harboring town of Labuhan
Lombok (place from where the ferry to Sumbawa leaves). Unless
you want to check out some spot on Lombok.
At Labuhan Lombok there are ferries to Sumbawa
every 2 hours and the crossing takes only 1,5 hours, plus
there is no hassle about the authorization of the vehicle
to make crossing.
At Sumbawa you will disembark at the harboring
town of Labuhan Tano and can either go to Scar Reef, Super
Sucks and Yoyo´s or go straight to Lakey Peak.
If you get out from the ferry (Labuhan Tano)
to go straight to Lakey Peak, it´s not necessary to
go to Taliwang (on the way to Scar Reef) just follow the
signs to Sumbawa Besar (few hours) where is possible to
spend the night in a place with a bit more infrastructure
as there are a few hotels and losmens besides restaurants,
pharmacies, markets, a hospital and even an airport. After
this, keep going to Dompu (another 4 hs) and then to Hu’u
(another 45 min.) (Lakey Peak). The trip from Sumbawa Besar
to Lakey Peak takes 5 hs in total.
At Lakey Peak you will find a good variety of
beach front losmens with different prices besides a very
nice hotel (Aman Gati) with swimming pool, cable Tv, and
rooms equipped with Tv, telephone, AC, Mini bar and hot
water.
The entire place has been developed on ocean
front, all the losmens and restaurants from the area were
built in this space of around 1 Km in front of the ocean,
that´s why the place breath surfing and all there
is to do is surf all day and spend the nights playing table
games or watching surf videos or movies during dinner in
one of the many restaurants spread in front of the beach
where Fatima´s is the most traditional for many years
owned by the French surfer Rachel married to the friendly
Fatima, local from the area.
