The Mentawais islands have on its extension more than 200 nautical miles and are situated on the west coast of Sumatra just south of Nias on a strategic position being open to any swell angle in the Indian Ocean. They work as a barrier to any passing swell on the way to Sumatra.

During the dry season (apr./nov.) the Indian Ocean become a swell producing machine that keeps shooting at the Mentawais. Considered the biggest discovery for free surfing of the last decades, they became really famous thanks to the massive exposure in the media of its waves as the most perfects in the world.

First discovered in the 70´s by traveling surfers passing thru this waters on their way to Phuket in Thailand where they use to go to chart boats in the high season, later it got famous when captain Martin Daly established himself in the area and start to uncover its treasures to the world.

This part of Indonesia is very remote and isolated, almost untouched by men and of a very unique beauty where the only way of interchange in between the various islands is made by small and medium size boats. There is even a boat that works as some kind of a floating market to the villages, coming from time to time, dropping anchor in between the little islands for the people to come in little canoes or paddling to buy goods that otherwise would never make their way here. The closest city to the islands is Padang, where everyday surfers from all over the world arrive to start their trip to the islands aboard the boats in search of waves.
