MENTAWAII |

To get to Padang surfers fly from Singapore (3x /week)
or from Jakarta (2x /day). At padang usually the surfers stay
at the hotel Bumi Minang for a day waiting for the yatch charters
to leave which happens every night from the Bungus port, located
at 80 nautical miles from the nearest surf spot.
The climate conditions here are completely different
than the conditions found in other parts of Indonesia. Storms
known as “Sumatras” are common and build up and move
without warning. A clear, calm morning can easily turn into a
day of violent storms. You are surfing the equator where it´s
common to get onshore winds by late morning. Opposite to Bali,
East, where the trade winds (E.S.E.) blow strong and steady during
the dry season, on upper Sumatra these winds come and go at any
time only blowing with a bit more intensity for a short while
sometimes.
Anyway, the diversity in the islands position guarantee
that there is always a spot with offshore winds at any wind direction
plus the consistency of the swell where at any swell size there
will always be surfable waves somewhere even when the swell is
small.
Apart from that, there is a huge abundance of sea
life and places with almost unexplored spots that every year surprises
with new discoveries of world class waves.
Main surf spots:
The Mentawais islands hold an incredible diversity of surf spots
with excellent conditions for surfing with different positioning
and angles, but the best is to get there and start the search
for your perfect wave as there still are a lot of places unexplored
still.
Amongst the main surf spots of Mentawais islands are:
Nyang-nyang área:
-E-bay:

to 8 feet. Whatch out for the end section.

at 4 to 6 feet S/SW swell specially when the other spots are small.

-Bankvaults:
It´s a powerful and hollow right hand that when gets big
can become dangerous. Best with S/SW swell up to 10 feet.

-Burger world:

and can be hollow or mushy depending on swell direction. Best
with swell from S/SW, 2 to 4 feet.
