Dreaming is necessary

Everything
we see surrounding us today, in our cosmopolitan lives, has
something in common. It all started with a dream, with an
idea. From there, it was created, developed and built.
A dream that most people have already had, is to be able to
wake up in a paradise island, surrounded by nature, with no
set appointments, no pollution, no violence, stress, traffic
jams, banks, or politicians.
We add to this dream perfect waves, breaking right in front
of your window and many others around, of the most varied
kinds, lefts, rights, tubes, walls, long, short, fast, slow,
killers, hot dogs…..
Since we are dreaming anyway, why don’t we completely
delete the crowds?
Believe it or not this IS reality. It is my reality and the
reality of my friend and business partner Paulo.
As everything else in human history, this reality started
off with a dream.
Making a dream come true may not be easy, but it is not impossible,
and it sure is worth it!
Today, June 29th of 2009, late afternoon, just me and Paulo
in the water, perfect 6 foot barrels rolling, empty, spitting
nervous sprays at each section of reef, with a texture that
is more like oil than water, so glassy the conditions.
We share only the best waves of each set, with our photographer
in the water and our video maker on the beach.
We talk in ecstasy about how incredible life is. Exactly three
years ago we didn’t even knew each other! Who would
have guessed!
It’s a crazy life. So much has happened, while at the
same time it feels like only yesterday, so much happiness,
sadness, barrels and wipeouts.
Today when we look at the beach it is indescribable, the pride
and emotion of seeing the imposing pyramids that make up the
Surfing Village, that we build with our own hands, one by
one, wood by wood, with a lot of sweat and blood. Who would
think that an unpretentious dream of two crazy guys, would
become what it is today, in so little time.
The original idea was to welcome friends to surf the fantastic
right-hander, with no fuss.
Ended up that the Surfing Village wasn’t reliant only
on the fantastic right-hander, we found out we were surrounded
by more than 20 incredibly perfect waves.
We don’t eat rice with coconut milk and chilly and sleep
on old skanky mattresses with our wet towels as pillows anymore.
We eat banquets, prepared by the Chef Glen, sleep on nice
spring mattresses with comfortable pillows and clean white
cotton sheets. Not to mention the cold beer, the fast wireless
satellite internet, the TV with Home Theater and dozens of
satellite channels, the pool table, the different hang out
areas, the toilet (with views of the barrels) with toilet
paper and flush, the sinks with tap water, the hot showers,
etc… All this in less than 3 years.
The one thing that hasn’t changed is the focus of why
we are here, and we want to make sure that we make it clear
for all who wish to dream wide awake with us here in this
paradise.
SURF. RESPECT. FRIENDSHIP. CAMARADERY. ROOTS. PEACE. LOVE.
All the rest is mere details, fussiness. The important things
are the barrels and the friendship generated by them.
